
This is where the sand dunes meet the mountains. I was fascinated with the idea of hiking to find where the granules meet rock. It’s a difficult hike because sand, but we got close enough for me to zoom in and take this photo.

Apparently the dunes began forming around 440,000 years ago. There was a lake there, but due to climate change, the lake dried up. The two creeks in the area deposit sand as it washes down from the mountain and gets carried to the valley floor. Scientists found evidence of people living in the area as early as 11,000 years ago.
I just can’t get over the mystique of these dunes. I cannot wait to go back.
