My mother has told me a few times throughout my life that leaving a little bit of water at the bottom of your kettle is good luck. Now, my mother marches to the beat of her own damn drum, always has. So I never realized where this came from until she told me a few years ago that her grandmother told her that. Since then, I always leave just a bit of water in the bottom of my kettle. I love the idea that it brings luck, but more importantly, it makes me feel connected to my heritage, to the ones who came before me. Even if it is in reality just a bit of water at the bottom of our kettle.
